BROTHERLY LOVE YOUNG MEN'S INSTITUTE

Brotherly Love Inc. is establishing a new institute starting fall 2014. The Young Men’s Institute (YMI) was founded by two University of Southern California Doctor of Education students with the intention to inspire and transform young men into the next generation of professional world leaders.

 

YMI’s program objective is to produce a more enlightened, educated, and equipped young man that is prepared to pursue and achieve their aspirations. This free yearlong program will provide high school aged young men with the needed tools to enhance their leadership abilities as well as complete their A-G requirements for acceptance into higher education.

 

The program features 12 focus areas, which will be covered in a single or multiple sessions over the course of the program. The topics will include the following:

 

 

  • Overview & Inspiration

  • Identity Development

  • Academic Enrichment

  • Leadership & Empowerment

 

 

Through these sessions the YMI program will promote positive youth development, academic achievement and social competency.

 

The activities will include but are not limited to: group mentoring, academic coaching, educational field trips, vocational and occupational opportunities, exposure to higher education, and special presentations by successful role models in various fields of expertise.  

 

Program Principles

 

This program seeks to engage in the following:

 

  • Reduce risky behaviors of high school aged young men while promoting positive behaviors.

  • Promote academic proficiency in school as well as on the California Standards Tests (CST).

  • Encourage school attendance; help lower school suspension rates, and lower referrals on campus.

  • Encourage students to accept responsibility for their actions.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to be responsible and successful good citizens.

  • Provide a safe environment where participants feel valued and appreciated.

  • Financial Literacy

  • Health & Wellness

 

  • Teen Issues

  • Etiquette

  • Community Engagement

  • Public Speaking

Program Outcomes

After participating in this program, participants will:

 

  • Develop a positive sense of self.

  • Learn to be accountable and responsible.

  • Obtain job training, which will assist them in acquiring and retaining a job.

  • Rise to their academic level.

  • Learn listening and communication skills.

  • Be more culturally aware and more conscious about their actions.

  • Be knowledgeable about taking care of themselves emotionally and physically.

  • Have decision-making skills and be able to develop their career plan.

  • Engage in community and active participants in their local community.
